The origins of the Aegis Imperium date back to the times before the Conflux, when the great Tindremic Empire was still at its glory. It was then that an ominous character, now known as The First Founder, gathered a number of carefully chosen people representing a wide variety of different backgrounds and cultures. They all had two things in common - influence in the world and interests that ran counter to those in power. There was the soldier who led an entire legion in mutiny in Myrland (and averted a major war by going native). There was the ruthless mistress of crime who ran every brothel in the city (and put an end to the epidemic of murderers with well-placed violence). There was the smuggler captain who grew fat off stolen taxes (and let the fledgling settlement of Gaul'kor survive by flouting the current Emperor's ban on trade with those of orcish blood). There were others, too, at the edges of the empire and beyond, working away, bringing unrest where there was injustice and peace where there was strife.
These selected individuals and the First Founder of the Aegis Imperium then formed a secret society within the Tindremic Empire and beyond. They acted everywhere without limits, and so grew larger and more powerful, influencing the world events in various ways, never revealing who they were, and what was their purpose. This is of course ancient history now, and as the Conflux changed many things, and brought old powers to their knees, it also brought down the old order of the Aegis Imperium. What remains now is the ideal and the insignia: The Aegis, an ancient symbol of protection. The spirit of the First Founder still lives, in the sense that the Aegis Imperium is prepared to do whatever necessary, for the benefit of everyone. And instead of hiding in the shadows, this time, we make ourselves known.
